How I Got Started With Digital Marketing

My journey kicked off 20+ years ago while I was serving in the United States Army, just another online business enthusiast chasing a dream of financial freedom drawn to the endless potential of the web.

As I navigated through the complexities and the exhilarating chances that internet marketing offers, I realized this was more than a passing interest, it was my calling. I have since dedicated myself to not only mastering market research but also to sharing that expertise with you.

From April 2005 until recently, I have invested over $60,000 in educating myself with the best information regarding digital marketing, affiliate marketing, online business mentorship, web design, search engine marketing, software, social media marketing, and more.

I am very passionate about running my online business and continue learning about personal/professional development. I enjoy reading books on topics such as online business, digital marketing, affiliate marketing, copywriting, investing, entrepreneurship and more.

I also enjoy networking with like-minded people who want to be successful in running an online business.

Having dedicated over 15 years to the United States Army during my active service, I embarked on numerous deployments worldwide, fostering deep bonds and immersing myself in diverse cultures along the way.

Throughout my military journey, I achieved significant milestones and underwent rigorous physical training, and professional development, honing not only my leadership skills but also acquiring invaluable proficiencies such as project management, critical thinking, and supervision. Reflecting on my service, I have no regrets; instead, I am grateful for the transformative experiences and knowledge gained that shaped me into a better person and leader.

I have several hobbies, but I like listening to smooth jazz the most. It helps me to relax. My other hobbies are traveling, sightseeing, reading books, and fitness. Fitness is very important to me because it helps me to stay in shape and maintain a strong mind.

In April 2005, while serving in the United States Army, I was sitting at home thinking about the future of my family and how we were struggling financially. At the time, I was unhappy, sick, and tired of being in debt and not able to do the things that I wanted to do with my family. I reached a point in my life where I was tired of not being able to enjoy life because of my financial situation.

That evening, I began researching on the internet to find out how to generate extra income online. I came across Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business On The Internet by Corey Rudl. It was a step-by-step guide that taught people how to start an online business from home without any experience selling products on the internet.

As I browsed, I became fascinated by reading the testimonials on how other individuals started their online businesses from home and how they achieved their financial dreams.

One of the things that intrigued me was that there were people in their 50s, 60s and even 70s generating thousands of dollars online from home. After getting the information about Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business On The Internet, I decided to purchase it.

I received the product a week later and quickly began learning everything I needed to know about selling products online. One of the first online business models I learned to make extra money online was from eBay. When I made my first sale on eBay, I shared the good news with my wife, and together we were so excited. I made a $600 profit in less than a week.

After that experience, I was thrilled and motivated to continue to look for other methods to make money online. As I continued reading more of Corey’s step-by-step guide, I learned how to build websites. Building websites was another online business model I used to make extra income.
Within a few weeks, I began building relationships in the Internet marketing sector and began building websites for clients, making an average between $500 to $700 per website.

Just when my online business was generating income, I had to put it on hold due to my military obligations. At the time, my work schedule at work was very demanding and there were times I had to leave my family for an extended period.

Getting Started Again

In September 2007, I purchased the new updated version of 2007 Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business On The Internet by Derek Gehl and began learning about the affiliate marketing business model. I enjoyed this online business model because all I had to do was promote affiliates’ products and not have to deal with customer service issues.

I instantly signed up to be an affiliate for Clickbank and Amazon and began promoting their products online. With these two affiliate networks, along with eBay, I have sold thousands of dollars of digital and physical products online.

In August 2007, I decided to go in a new direction with my online business and create my own product. While browsing the internet once more, I came across the Advanced Mentoring Program created by Derek Gehl. This was a six-month mentoring program that provided an online business coach that taught individuals how to build and grow a successful, profitable online business faster than doing it alone.

Since I was going in a new direction, I went ahead and tried it. I invested $7,000 in the advanced mentoring program. This was one of the best investments I made with my online business.

What I loved about the advanced mentoring program was that I was given step-by-step assignments for six months. Within a few weeks, I had built my website and created my first product. Every week I had two meetings with my mentor and continuous email check-ins to make sure what I was doing was working.

One thing I did not integrate into my online business back in 2005 was automation. With the help of my mentor, I built a drumming website that sold an eBook that taught people how to play the drums by ear. The website was completely automated.

When someone subscribed to my newsletter, the autoresponder I set up would deliver a subscriber to my newsletter automatically, and when someone purchased my eBook, it was delivered to the client automatically without me lifting a finger. I was impressed by the automation.

Within a few weeks, I made over $800 while away from the computer. I would receive notifications from PayPal through my cell phone that said, you got paid! That experience was so formidable.

In February 2008, I completed the advanced mentoring program. Having an online business coach made a significant difference in running my online business. With my online business, I was able to accelerate the learning curve and produce results faster than before.

I was doing ok when I was doing things on my own, but having my own business coach made a significant difference in my business.
For the next 9 months, I had to shut my online business down because of my job. For the next three years, I was not able to dedicate time to my online business due to my military obligations.

With a higher promotion as a senior leader comes more responsibilities, and less time with the family, and even less time for my online business.

Military Career Came to An End

Unfortunately, in November 2012, I was medically discharged from active duty. Today, I run my online business from home part-time.
